Previous research has consistently shown that adolescents with poor relationships with theirparents or peers are likely to be involved in excessive gaming. However, no research has beenconducted on relationship of parental attachment, peer attachment, and excessive gaming. Thuswe examined a mediating role of peer attachment in the effect of parental attachment onexcessive gaming. Our participants were 584 middle and high school students in D city(meanage=14.61; SD=2.42; males 51.5%). The mediation analysis results demonstrated a significantpartial mediation, adolescents with low levels of parental attachment were more likely to havelow levels of peer attachment, as a result, were more prone to engage in excessive gaming. Furthermore, parental attachment also directly affected excessive gaming. The partial mediatingeffects were not significantly vary as a function of sex. Our findings indicate that it is imperativeto consider adolescent parental and peer attachment and to monitor the effects of parentalattachment on peer attachment in excessive gaming interventions.
