The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of emotional labor on the suicidal ideationof correctional officers at correctional institutions and tests the mediating effects of burnout anddepression. To this end, data were collected from 276 correctional officials working at sixinstitutions in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from April 5 to April 17, 2021, and the main resultsare as follows. The results are as follows. First, the emotional labor, burnout, and depression ofcorrectional officers all had significant positive correlations with suicidal ideation. Secondly,burnout and depression was a significant mediating variable between emotional labor andsuicidal ideation. Finally, burnout and depression had statistically significant dual mediatingeffects on relations between emotional labor and suicidal ideation. While depression hadsignificant positive effects between them, burnout had no statistically significant effects betweenthem, depression has greater influences than burnout when they are introduced simultaneouslyin relationship between the emotional labor and suicidal ideation. Based on this study, variousmeasures were proposed to prevent future suicidal thoughts of correctional officials.
