<Abstract>

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in self-esteem, sociality, personal

relationship, and attitude to counseling among the groups of the hearing impaired person using

different communication methods. A total of 118 male and female hearing-impaired people,

over 20 years old, in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam and Daejeon participated in the study.

The results of the study were as follows. First, there was no remarkable statistical difference in

overall self-esteem depending on Groups of the Handicapped with Hearing Impairment.

However, in terms of leadership and popularity as sub factors of self-esteem, the

hearing-impaired communicating only in spoken language had more ability and higher level of

leadership and popularity than the others using only sign language. Second, the result of

statistic showed that Groups of the Handicapped with Hearing Impairment only in spoken

language achieved higher level of sociality than using only sign language. Third, also

hearing-impaired using only spoken language showed higher sympathy-acceptive tendency than

using only sign language. Lastly, regardless of Groups of the Handicapped with Hearing

Impairment, all of subjects answered that they need counseling to solve their problems.
